It does feature a fair number of small settlements, but these always seem to be guarded, and there is a constant risk of patrolling angels moving in to reclaim them. The Celestial Plane is guarded by a mixture of saintly humans (mostly weak, apart from the occasional spellcaster or mounted paladin) and powerful angelic beings (often very dangerous, sometimes capable of charming and/or banishing invading troops en masse). While the player may be able to sneak past the angels and into the Celestial Plane, it is only a matter of time before the carnage in Elysium claims their last citadel or wipes out the last of their opponents, ending the game and cutting short their exploration. The obvious downside to causing the apocalypse is that it is the apocalypse it makes it enormously difficult for the player, and everyone else, to survive indefinitely. Otherwise, there are always sacred springs in the Void that lead into the Celestial plane.įinally there is one very easy means of access to this plane: play as the Voice of El and open all of the seals, bringing about the apocalypse and causing a gate to the Celestial Plane to open in Elysium. There is a single permanent portal going from the Primal plane to the Celestial plane, guarded by an angelic fortress on the Primal side The Celestial plane is one of the more difficult planes to access by most players. Should infernal forces find their way into Elysium a heavenly gate will open and angels will enter Elysium and the righteous will be able to flee into Heaven. According to old prophecies a war between the angelic and infernal forces will one day take place in Elysium. However, the priests of El claim that those who die free of sin will be brought here to live in eternal bliss. The abode of angels and celestial powers is unattainable to mere mortals. Before a specific plane has been viewed or visited, the selection button for that plane is grayed out and inaccessible. Once another plane has been glimpsed or visited, its known locations can be viewed by selecting the plane from the menu bar at the top of the main Map Screen. Beyond the barriers of movement or the senses there are other worlds, other planes of existence that interact with Elysium. This version runs natively in Windows.Elysium is a mystical world of secrets and a nexus of many channels of power. Each character has essentially their own gameplay style and tricks, with some being fairly straightforward, like the Baron, and some exceedingly complex, like the Necromancer.Ĭonquest of Elysium II was developed for multiple platforms and initially sold as shareware, but since 2007 the free full version may be downloaded from the developer's site. The whopping nineteen archetypes are divided into four large groups: Warlord, Mage, Priest and Non-Human, each with several options. What is truly astounding is the number of different character classes the player may choose as the leader of their kingdom. High taxes will also result in the subjects becoming unhappy and prone to revolts. Upkeep is not factored in, but the amount of tax may be adjusted, and seasons affect income as well. The economy is simple on the surface: the more assets you have, like farms, towns or mines, the more income you get. In addition to AI and human players, there are neutral monsters and other characters wandering around, which may be attacked but are not always hostile. Combat is entirely automated, as in Warlords, but is more complex and will factor in several variables like a unit's condition, or special abilities and spells. Seasons also play a role, as winter is not the best time for long marches for example. Armies controlled by the players use action points to move around, with different terrain types taking a different amount of points to traverse. The map consists of square tiles, each representing a different kind of terrain and possibly a place, ranging from simple farms to towns and castles, to various mines and other places. A game may be played on a pre-set scenario, or on a completely random map that is generated based on several choices offered to the player that determine both the natural and the socio-political landscape of the world that will be created. Naturally, there are other pretenders that must be taken care of before this goal may be accomplished. The player controls a kingdom in the world of Elysium, and strives to become the sole ruler of the land. Conquest of Eysium II is a fantasy turn-based strategy game with many similarities to Warlords and Master of Magic, but not quite like any one of these, or any other game for that matter, with considerable depth hiding behind a façade of simplistic visuals.
